Local Ordinances and Sustainability

Convened by John Schuster at Blue Nile at 11:15am

Attendees: Bill Ney, John Eckman, Tony Lopez, Pete Bsumek, John Schuster

Our topics of concern were: Signs, landscaping, utilities and alternative dwellings. We all pretty much agreed that local ordinances related to restrictions on size, structure and amount of light from signs should be regulated. In new construction there should be regulations pertaining to how much green is incorporated, ie trees etc..by changing ordinances to accommodate dwellings we were talking about different community structures such as centralizing the dwelling and having a green space around it. the central structure or structures would be multi-family use.

We also talked about how to go about enacting ordinances on existing structures such as overhead to underground utility lines, existing businesses that have little or no green (worst case scenario, Harrisonburg Crossing), ten year plan of implementing desired plan of sign restrictions, and incorporating changes in zoning ordinances pertaining to number of unrelated people that could live in one dwelling.” Anyone in the group We decided to act on our discussion by coordinating some of this with the Sierra Club. I volunteered to research how other communities have successfully place ordinances in place even though those physical structures were in place (example Staunton, VA).

Three of us were going to actively pursue this by the methods above, checking on the Harrisonburg master plan and the Shenandoah Valley Master Plan(?).
