Convened by Laura Dansby at Cally’s at 11:15am

Attendees: 24

Discussion based on a cooperative effort by the National Wildlife Federation and the Garden Clubs of Virginia.

Discussion Topics:

  • The science of global warming, how it starts, how it works, the human contribution to other sources of warming.
  • Differences among global cultures.
  • Evidence from multiple science sources.  Atmospheric effects, sea level rises, glacial and sea ice melting, effects on plants and animals.
  • Documented effects in addition to warming:  ocean acidification, insect invasions, increased drought, floods, weather events.  Dead zones oceans and bays, incl. Chesapeake.
  • Loss of wetlands and effects of that.
  • Effects in Virginia now and projected with continued emissions of greenhouse gases.
  • Threats to plant and animal populations and diversity as well as to food crops.
  • $5 billion annual losses/year already.
