Discussion Topics
- Discussed the ability to post events to a community calendar and create community groups through social media. Looking into the functionality of Common Place to determine if this is a viable platform to meet the groups goals
- Local sustainability groups are looking for ways to coordinate efforts and meetings in order to build each other up instead of competing for resources and attention.
- Formation of a coalition will be about action not about more events
- Earth Week calendar is an example of how local groups came together for an action
- A coalition like this could advocate for shared interests to create positive change in the community. could do local government outreach, assist with planning process changes, and help local businesses go green by encouraging demand
- The group might take on the creation of a climate action plan
- This group could be a place for public, private, non-profit, and for profit groups to come together
- The group needs a central IDEA and platform that everyone can get behind
- The groups needs to be very careful when forming the boundaries and leadership structure
Next meeting is May 3rd 2011 at 5:00 pm in Clementine’s Basement
Many attendees chose to be added to the Harrisonburg Ecominds Google Group Listserv (a listserv of about 100 people interested in sustainability issues)
