We discussed the plans in effect to change bicycle routes in both the City and County. Travis is already active in this endeavor in the County(Rockingham), and is a member of the bicycle coalition. He is looking into and planning for bicycle safety and accessibility by making more of off road routes a possibility as well as working with existing roads. The Bicycle Coalition is interested in using more road space on existing roads in the City as well as implementing planned off road routes within the City.
A futuristic idea is to make 20 foot easements down the middle of existing backyards for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Travis suggested that this could be implemented behind existing business also, like behind the South Main businesses.
We decided to let the bicycle coalition continue its existing plans. We both thought that the 20 foot easement plan was a good idea, but people would not go for it until a greater percentage of the public was actively riding a bike.
