1. Explorer Post: local privately owned flight school/training aimed at 14-20-year-old males; engaging youth through aviation training. Participants can learn to fly airplanes for free ($60 one-time fee). Jason Long and business partner pay for all of the books and other learning materials. See their website at www.shenandoahaviationexplorers.com.

2. “Rockettown” (building in downtown Tenn. City, warehouse district) hosted music events for youth with Christan musicians…possible idea for future teen events or future teen hangout spot in our community. Possible problems: funding, insuring events, sustainability, appeal to local youth, etc.

3. Massanutten Regional Library trying to establish a space within the downtown library for teens to meet for literary and other events

4. Raleigh Theater has youth auditon for plays and perform them for the community as a way to get youth involved in alternative activities. They teach them all aspects of theatre (idea for alternative activity in our community).

5. Facilities of Camp Horizon available for those hosting activities/events for teens. Can use their facilities at low cost if you’re a non-profit organization or program.

6. E.D.G.E. program: E.D.G.E. is a nonprofit, community-based program that hosts free or low cost substance-free events for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County high school teens. Events in the past have included movie nights, ice skating, a BBQ in the park, a dance, and others. E.D.G.E. will be hosting a “Dance of the Decades” on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Lucy Simms Center auditorium for local high school teens, which will feature dance/costume contests w/ great prizes, a photo booth, refreshments, and more. For more information about EDGE, contact Amanda Shomo, RMH Community Health at (540) 438-6738.
