Convener/Scribe: Lynn Cameron
Table I 2:00
Attendees: Pete Mahoney, Carol Lena Miller, Kim Sandum, Mark Miller, Lynn Cameron
Notes:
We discussed the benefits of designating national forest land on Shenandoah Mountain as a National Scenic Area. It would ensure clean water for Harrisonburg and would enhance our local recreation-based economy. Businesses such as outdoor stores, restaurants, B & Bs, retail stores, wand many others have endorsed the proposal, as well as a number of local, regional, and national organizations. Friends of Shenandoah Mountain wants to reach out to the hunting community and ask for their support. One idea that emerged was to have an information session about the proposal just for hunters. This could clarify any misconceptions and assure hunters that they could continue to hunt and use existing roads.
The group also talked about the impact industrial wind development would have on Shenandoah Mountain. A committee is currently working on a wind ordinance for Rockingham County.
