Conversation on Healthcare
Back to Agenda
Topic: Community Health Literacy
Location: Old Dominion Coffee Company
Convened: 8/30/2009 11:45 am
Attendees and Affiliations:
Lyn Wright
Mike Trainum
Notes:
This session wasn’t announced at 9:30, so only two of us were there. Items discussed: * Health Literacy is the ability to process critical information effectively, not just read it. * Approximately 50% of the people in the USA do not have adequate health literacy skills. * Information on such topics as the new H1N1 influenza (swine flu) are thus “invisible” and ignored by approx. 50% of the population of Harrisonburg. This places these people and those around them at greater risk of contracting H1N1. * The Harrisonburg-Rockingham departments of Social Services and Health are aware of this issue, but have few options other than passing along the “complex” information they receive from federal agencies (CDC, etc)
